Our History

Foundation for Fogo was founded in 2021 in response to a deeply felt truth: communities across Cabo Verde deserve accessible, culturally rooted mental health support and essential care services.

The organization was established just one month before the passing of Judith Dasilva, a lifelong nonprofit leader whose work inspired generations of service and advocacy. Her legacy continues through Foundation for Fogo’s commitment to dignity, wellness, and creative healing.

Its origins, however, stretch back even further. The loss of the founder’s father to suicide years earlier underscored the urgent need for local mental health resources, especially in places where such support is rarely available or openly discussed.

The Foundation was born out of this dual inheritance: the grief of loss, and the strength of service.

What began as a small effort rooted in the island of Fogo is now a growing force for systemic, sustainable change across Cabo Verde and beyond.

Our Purpose

Foundation for Fogo exists to bridge gaps in care—through mental health resources, vision access, maternal wellness, and cultural empowerment.

The organization believes that healing doesn’t start with systems. It starts with connection. Through a mix of innovation and grassroots organizing, Foundation for Fogo meets people where they are—with tools that are creative, dignified, and rooted in community.

Why We support in Mental Health and Art

Cabo Verde ranks as the second smallest country in Africa by land size, yet it holds the seventh position for the highest suicide rates relative to its population.

This alarming statistic underscores the reason behind the establishment of our nonprofit organization.

We invest in mental health and art because they have the power to transform communities and individuals alike. Mental health is the cornerstone of well-being, impacting every aspect of our lives.

By supporting mental health initiatives, we empower individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives, which in turn strengthens communities and societies as a whole.

Art, in all its forms, serves as a universal language that can transcend barriers and inspire change. Through art, we can challenge stigmas, raise awareness, and create a sense of belonging and healing.

We also recognize the positive impact it can bring to those suffering from mental health challenges, offering them a powerful means of expression and coping.

Moreover, we invest in art because we want people from communities without resources to feel a sense of hope that their life experiences can have a use for them at the end of everything.

Art provides a meaningful outlet for individuals to harness their life experiences, turning them into sources of strength and inspiration.
