Welcome to Nu Odja, a program dedicated to providing access to vision care for individuals in Fogo, and eventually all islands in Cabo Verde. 

We recognize that poor vision can have a significant impact on mental health, affecting interpersonal interactions, confidence, and overall well-being. 

Our goal is to bridge the gap in resources and ensure that everyone in our community has access to the vision care they need.

In Cabo Verde, the cost of a pair of glasses is often equivalent to the monthly minimal wage, making it difficult for many individuals to obtain proper vision care. 

At Nu Odja, we believe that prescription glasses should not be an expensive luxury, and we are committed to providing them at no cost to those born in Fogo, Cabo Verde.

Our program consists of three phases:

Phase 1: We provide prescription glasses at no cost to those with a prescription. 

Phase 2: We provide access to no-cost appointments for individuals who do not yet have a prescription. Through partnerships with local optometrists, we aim to increase access to vision care and provide education on the importance of regular eye exams.

Phase 3: We will offer optometry scholarships and contract work opportunities to individuals interested in pursuing a career in optometry. By investing in the education and training of local individuals, we hope to increase access to vision care in Fogo and beyond.
